Update on hellebore operation...
We are pleased to announce that we are enlarging our hellebore operation, focusing exclusively on our hellebore breeding program to meet the growing demand for outstanding quality in color and form of this exceptional perennial.
We will once again provide well-developed seedlings in large quantities to be available in March 2009 under the Winter Jewels® trademark. These hand-pollinated crosses will all be separated by color and by single or double and can easily be shipped. If you are interested in receiving an availability and price list, please contact us by phone, fax or e-mail.
We started our hellebore breeding program in 1991 with seeds from well-known growers in England and Germany. Working to breed with a larger selection of the best colors in hybrids, we traveled to Germany, Holland and England to buy the best stock plants we could find from top growers and have since improved our selection continually.
We hand pollinate all our stock plants, which are kept isolated from other pollinators and we have been able to improve color and form each year. We ruthlessly discard any inferior stock plant. Our aim has been to produce consistent improvement in clarity of color, vigor and foliage.
For more information and additional photos of the breeding stock, check the links to the Breeding Stock. The pictures for 2008 breeding stock will be up soon.
Changes for the coming season...
The Nursery will be changing focus beginning with the 2008 season. We will be specializing even more heavily in hellebores and phasing out sales of most other perennials. On open days, we will continue to offer some plants for sale. These will include podophyllums, epimediums, trilliums and arisaemas, as well as some potted bulbs that are unusual and hard to find elsewhere.
We will be open for the Hellebore Open Garden Days in 2009 (see information to the right) and then for regular hours, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, 10-5 until Friday, April 10.
